‘HIV risk rises as climate disasters push African women to sell sex’

Writing in The Thomson Reuters Foundation’s The Context, Nita Balla brings the human stories of one of the key pathways in which climate change is increasing the spread of HIV. The article builds upon the conceptual framework build by Propelevate for FrontlineAIDS.

Propelevate’s work helping Frontline AIDS better understand how climate change affects HIV has been featured in the Lancet. We spoke to Frontline AIDS’ frontline partners around the world about their experience, we reviewed existing literature and we spoke to climate/health experts.

One ideal channel for distributing self-care medicines and devices is private pharmacies; as they tend to be open more days and hours than clinics, have less waiting time, and are generally staffed by trained pharmacists who can provide supportive advice. In addition, they provide a stigma-free environment where it is easier to solicit support for sensitive health issues since it is socially acceptable to be seen in a pharmacy.
